More about Vivian Lawry

Vivian Lawry has ties to Kentucky, upstate New York, Washington, DC, Maryland, and Massachusetts but her roots are in Appalachia. She grew up in a farming community in Ohio, the oldest of three children. She liked to think that she was her father's favorite, though they often butted heads when her willfulness met his stubborn resolve.

Her mother had a tenth grade education, her father completed eighth grade. But both valued education, the union card to a better life. The first money she ever earned was a nickel for every C, a dime for every B, and a quarter for every A on her report card. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class-which she had the good sense to value more than being track queen, football homecoming queen, and editor of the yearbook.

The summer she was twelve, she had her first fulltime job. She worked summers and after school in high school, two or three jobs at a time in college. She won scholarships, took out loans, and eventually earned B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio University.

After rewarding careers as a professor of psychology, an association executive, and vice president and dean at a private liberal arts college, she moved to Virginia and turned to creative writing.

The writing life is good!
